Let's Elevate! You’re doing it—you’re finally making the move to hire a professional photographer for your headshots or personal branding photo session! You’ve dreamed of having stunning images that truly represent you and your brand. Now you’ve found the perfect photographer, booked your session, and it’s time to get ready. This preparation guide is here to help you plan your photo session with easy, practical tips that ensure you’ll feel confident and look your best.
Planning for Success
My headshot and personal branding photo sessions are all about elevating yourself or your brand with authority. How do you want to show up in the world? What would you like people to say about you when they see your photo?
Each session is thoughtfully designed to capture the best version of you. I aim to create a stress-free experience that leaves you feeling accomplished and optimistic about your professional and personal image. These photos are an investment in yourself, so let’s make them count!
Your Style, Elevated
Rule number one: do not bring clothes you don’t love. Your wardrobe should make you feel confident, comfortable, and true to yourself. Take the time to curate 3-5 outfits that you absolutely adore, and I’ll help you decide which ones will photograph best.
With the chance to change outfits, you can showcase a variety of styles—professional, casual, and even glam if you’re feeling it!
Here are some key tips to keep in mind:
Stick to solid colors. Avoid busy prints, they can be distracting, specially on camera. Neutral colors complement social feeds, most brand colors, and text - and they encourage people to look at you.
Layer and texture add interest. Don't be afraid to wear layers or integrate in different textures like lace or ruffles!
Bring variety. Don’t pack multiple outfits in the same color. Aim for a mix of hues and styles. When in doubt bring something light, something dark and something colorful.
Fitted clothing is key. Wear more fitted clothing. Beautiful, flowy outfits might make you look boxy on camera - so try to stick to more fitted lines. I want you want to feel as confident as possible and show it with your photographs.
Wrinkle-free is a must. Steam or iron your clothes in advance. Wrinkly clothes doesn’t look good for your brand, and it's not always easy to fix on photoshop. My advice here has always been to iron your clothes, and put them all on hangers the day before your photoshoot.
Plan for your location. When photographing in location. choose outfits that compliment your shoot’s setting.
