5 Tips for a Professional Headshot You'll Love

When you're gearing up for your headshot appointment, you're probably focused on what to wear, getting a hair appointment, and maybe even thinking about hiring a makeup artist to help you look your best. But there's more to it than that—these tips for a professional headshot are essential, and I want to share them with you so you feel confident on your next professional headshot photo session.

Professional Headshots

1.-Get a good night's sleep

I get it, life is busy, and sometimes staying up late feels like the only way to squeeze everything in. But trust me, those extra hours of sleep the night before your headshot session can make a world of difference. You’ll feel more relaxed, positive, and yes, those pesky under-eye bags will be less noticeable. Tempting as it might be to watch one more episode of your favorite Netflix show while munching on chips, try to resist. Avoiding salty snacks the night before will help keep puffiness at bay.

2.-Find your best side

Most of us have that side we prefer to show in photos, and there’s no shame in letting your photographer know. A good photographer will take shots from different angles so you can pick the one that feels most like you. If you’re worried about facial symmetry, turning slightly can even out those little differences.

3.-Nail your posture

Stand tall and keep your back straight—think of it as your power stance. Good posture sends a message of confidence, and it shows through the lens. You’ll likely be guided by the photographer on how to pose, but a good starting point is to stand at a slight angle to the camera and turn your head toward the lens. During my sessions, I always guide my clients on where to look and how to position their hands to ensure they feel comfortable and achieve a natural, relaxed pose.

4.-Practice makes perfect

Take some time before your shoot to practice different facial expressions in the mirror. Maybe you prefer a full smile or a more serious look—either way, it’s good to know what feels most natural. When you’re getting your photo taken, try a subtle squint (some call it a “squinch”) to avoid the wide-eyed, deer-in-the-headlights look.

5.-Just relax

In my sessions, the most important tip I give is to relax! I make it a point to chat with you, share a laugh, and create a comfortable atmosphere in front of the camera. The more at ease you feel, the better your photos will turn out. You don’t need to worry about what to do or say—I’ll guide you through the entire session to ensure we capture the best version of you.

I hope these tips for a professional headshot help you get a headshot you’ll be proud to show off. If you found this helpful, share it with someone who’s due for an update!
